Traveling for Birds

Traveling for Birds is a flagship storytelling project dedicated to promoting bird conservation and citizen science across Kenya. Through photography and photo stories, the project seeks to inspire curiosity about birds while encouraging students and the general public to actively observe, document, and appreciate the country’s rich birdlife. The project was inspired by the book Top 50 Birding Sites in Kenya by Catherine Ngarachu, which highlights some of the most remarkable birding destinations across the country. The book provides detailed insights into each site, including habitats, key bird species, other wildlife present, and practical guidance on where the sites are located and how to access them.

Building on this foundation, Traveling for Birds takes the journey into the field visiting these important birding landscapes and translating them into powerful visual stories. Through images, the project documents the diversity of Kenya’s birdlife and the ecosystems that sustain them, while also bringing these stories into schools and communities to spark interest in birdwatching and citizen science. By connecting people to birds through storytelling and education, Traveling for Birds aims to cultivate a new generation of conservation-minded citizens who recognize the importance of protecting habitats and monitoring bird populations for the future of biodiversity.
